MUSEUM HYDRA
Historic House of Lazaros Kountouriotis.
The striking mansion do minating the slope to the west of the town centre, in the characteristic ochre colour. It belonged to one of the most eminent and richest Hydriot squires of the period of the Revolution, Lazaros Kountouriotis, who
played a crucial role in the events of that period. The architecture of the building is a typical example of the architecture of an 18th c. Hydriot mansion and was donated to the Greek State, together with its household stuff, by the great-grandson of Lazaros Kountouriotis, Pantelis Kountouriotis, in 1979. Restoration works have been caried out since then and today the visitor can admire very remarkable heirlooms and exhibits on its three floors. The main house on ground floor B includes the household stuff of the family, which evidences the wealth and the luxury they gained from shipping. Wall tables, sideboards, elaborately gilded mirors, bronze items, valuable dinnerware and portraits as well as the sword and the medals of Lazaros Kountouriotis. The most important figures of the Revolution met in these spaces and discussed the events of that period. The first floor of the mansion includes an exhibition with several traditional costumes, embroideries, woven items and jewels. In other words, the mansion also serves as the museum of folk art of Hydra and other islands. Finally, ground floor A accommodates a permanent painting exhibition with works by Pericles and Constantine Byzantios, two great Greek painters of the 20th c. that connected their lives with Hydra. The Kountouriotis mansion is a branch of the National & Historical Museum of Greece.
